Open studio sharing event – 5 March

Saturday 5 March, 2-4pm, drop-in

Caglar will share audio bites and film clips gathered from his research in Walsall.

The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to be hosting the 2015-16 Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary, an annual residency established by disability-led arts organisation, Shape, to support mid-career disabled artists to develop their practice and profile.

This year’s recipient, digital and video artist Caglar Kimyoncu, will use the bursary to extend his research into the issue of the militarisation of youth and provide a space for those voices he identifies to be excluded or marginalised in society. His residency is informed by his perspective as a disabled person and background as the son of a professional soldier.

Please book your seat for the sharing by emailing or phoning The New Art Gallery Walsall and let us know if you have any access requirements

Conscience: the militarisation of youth in Britain

This month, we attended and introduced the first in a series of events at The New Art Gallery, Walsall which will follow the progress of our current Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary artist in residence, Çağlar Kimyoncu.

Over the course of his three month residency, Çağlar will be conducting conversations under the project title ‘Conscience: the militarisation of youth in Britain’. This is a research-based installation piece which builds on previous projects exploring militarisation, conscription and conscientious objection in Turkey and Israel.

‘Conscience’ is a multimedia art installation project currently in its research and development stage at the New Art Gallery, Walsall, and part of the Gallery’s collaboration with Shape Arts for the Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary. The project seeks to explore the relationship between young people and the armed forces in Britain. Direct or relevant experience of this topic is desirable.

The project will involve collaborative improvisation with both cast and crew to develop the story during the filmmaking process, based on source material from field research and interviews. You should be confident and comfortable with this process, and with the subject matter and the fact that this will be explored from every angle and point of view.

While this call is specifically for the dates above, it is possible that this will lead to further work as the project progresses. The multimedia installation will be exhibited later in the year with an additional live performance.
